This is one freebie I recommend to anyone.
CleanMem is an excellent little program that uses Windows API calls to tell programs to free up unused memory. This makes it much different than traditional memory cleaning programs that basically overload the memory, forcing programs to free up what they’re not using. This overload-the-memory approach would usually lock up your system for at least a brief moment while “cleaning” the memory. They are typically memory hogs themselves, and usually run in the background (though not all of them do.)
CleanMem on the other hand does not run in the background. Instead, it is run by the Task Scheduler every 30 minutes (you can adjust that interval, but every 30 should be plenty.) This means no additional overhead of a process running in the background all of the time. CleanMem does its job in less than a second, and then exits. It is very efficient and light-weight (the actual program file is only 32KB, tiny compared to just about any other program you run.)
For the skeptics out there (and I know when it comes to memory cleaning, there are quite a few,) take a look at these screen shots:
As you can see, CleanMem makes a big difference. FireFox dropped from 135MB to just 9MB. Now, it is important to note that as soon as I jumped back into FireFox its memory usage jumped back up too. It is indeed using that memory while I am in the program. Not all programs will do that however. Many will free their memory usage and stay at the lower usage for quite some time (until they actually do something.) TeaTimer is an excellent example of this. It was up to 48MB, down to 1.6MB after running CleanMem, and now, some 5 minutes later, it is only up to 2.6MB.
Anyone in their right mind will download and install this software right now! It really is great! Kudos to Shane, the developer – Great Program!!!
You can download CleanMem from PCWinTech.com. It is 100% free, no adware, no spyware. If your antivirus program complains about it, it is a false positive. CleanMem is 100% virus free.
CleanMem runs on Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 2008, & Win7 (32bit & 64bit)
I found this little gem on DotTech.org, one of my favorite sites to read, you can check out their review here.
